The Port of Pago Pago is the gateway to the magnificent islands of American Samoa.  It is located in the island of Tutuila, the largest of five volcanic islands (Tutuila, Aunu'u, Ta'u, Ofu, and Olosega) and two atolls (Rose and Swains).  The harbor itself was created by nature with an average depth of 30 fathoms (180 feet) and is surrounded by Mount Alava, Mount Matafao and Rainmaker Mountain.

PORT FACILITIES

The Port of Pago Pago Administrative Building was demolished in 2022.  We are currently in the design phase of the new port building.  Construction will commence in 2024.

  • Container Terminal - used to load and unload containers
  • Multiuse Wharf - used for cruise ship operations, berthing, and other operations
  • Service Wharf - used by the American Samoa Government Fleet
  • Inter-Island Terminal - used for inter-island cargo and ferry transportation

HOURS OF OPERATION

Port of Pago Pago is closed on:

  • Thanksgiving Day until 1800
  • December 24 @ 1800
  • December 25 All Day
  • December 26 until 0600
  • December 31 at 1800
  • January 1 All Day
  • January 2 until 0600

Note:  If a Holidays listed above are not observed on the actual day of the holiday, the Port shall also close on the day the holiday is in fact observed until 0600 the following day. 

ACCESS TO PORT OF PAGO PAGO

  • VESSELS
    • All ships calling at the port of Pago Pago must receive approval to entering port.
    • Ships shall provide necessary documentation for clearance.
  • VEHICLES & PORT WORKERS
    • Effective January 1, 2024, all vehicles shall be required to have a Port of Pago Pago issued decal, to enter the Port.
    • Effective January 1, 2024, all port workers shall be required to have a Port of Pago Pago issued ID, to enter the Port.
    • IDs and Decals shall be renewed annually.
  • PORT VISITORS
    • Effective January 1, 2024, all port visitors shall be required to have an escort badge or be escorted by a Port ID holder.

  • Pilotage is advised but not compulsory in the Port of Pago Pago. 
  • Pilot on board position at Whale Rk
  • It is the role of the agent to book pilotage services.

MARINE CHARTS

  • United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) conducted a hydro survey of the Port of Pago Pago in April 2023.We are awaiting the charts from this survey.

NAVIGATION AIDS

  • The Port of Pago Pago is equipped with Navigational Aids.

ANCHORAGE

  • Anchorage points are shared to the vessel by the Harbor Master to be contacted via Channel 16 or via email.

TOWAGE

  • Towage services are available.
  • It is the role of the agent to book towage services.

GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

All government agencies tasked with the clearance of vessels and passengers are no longer housed at the port; nevertheless, they are accessible at the port as needed for operations, especially clearances.

VESSEL ARRIVAL

  • Shipping agents coordinates with vessel for the Vessel Arrival check list and required documents for clearance parties.

SECURITY

  • Port of Pago Pago provides 24/7 security.

SAFETY

  • EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
    • Emergency procedures for identified emergencies have been defined and exercised on an annual basis.
    • Unannounced drills held throughout the year.
    • Full Scale Exercise held annually
  • PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
    • All workers entering the Port are required to wear minimum PPE: Helmet, Vest, and Safety Shoes.
